Answers to Questions About Hypnosis



    Yes, hypnosis (being in the state of hypnosis) is completely safe. It's actually a natural state that we regularly drift in and out of without even noticing. Most fears of hypnosis are caused because of the way it's portrayed in films. That's complete fantasy! Genuine hypnosis is completely safe and incredibly therapeutic.

    It is not possible to get 'stuck' in hypnosis, anymore than it is possible to get stuck in normal sleep. Occasionally, we sleep through the alarm clock, as you probably know. And occasionally we 'sleep through' the wake up script when we are in hypnosis. It doesn't happen very often, but it is possible. When this happens it's very easy for a hypnotist to go through the script again, with a little more enthusiasm, and bring us back to fully waking consciousness.

    If you were left in trance without a wake up script (perhaps you were listening to a recorded induction and the electricity failed half way through) you would either wake up immediately, wake up after a few minutes due to boredom, feeling uncomfortable, being too hot or too cold or needing the loo, or, if you were extremely tired, you would go right through hypnosis into normal sleep and wake in the usual way once rested.

    To become 'stuck' in hypnosis simply can't happen. The myth was originally created by the incorrect portrayal of hypnosis in films.



    Yes. And so can a salesman, a politician, a school teacher, a parent, a doctor, a... well you get the idea. It's really very easy to get someone to do something against their will. People have very weak wills. If, on the other hand, you are trying to get someone to do something that they consider to be morally wrong, it's very difficult (not impossible, just very difficult).

    The question shouldn't be can you use hypnosis for evil (which is what I think people are really asking when they ask this question) but 'Would you?'

    Think of a scalpel. A tool that can save your life... or end it, depending on the person with the scalpel. A scalpel is just a tool, in and of itself it can't really harm anyone (OK that's not the best example, I'd hate to step on a scalpel that was just 'doing nothing')

    The point is, hypnosis is just a tool. It isn't good or bad, it just is. However, people use hypnosis and some people are good and some are not. Yes, the hypnotic state can be exploited to make you do something you wouldn't usually do... but, as hypnosis is a process of communicating with your subconscious mind, and your subconscious mind is primarily concerned with your well being, you are very unlikely to do anything too extreme.

    Of course, for any of this to even matter you would first need to find an 'evil hypnotist' and agree to allow them to hypnotize you. And I'm guessing you wouldn't do that. If you want to go to a hypnotist, go to one that comes highly recommended, check them out first, and if you're in any way worried about what suggestions they might give you, have the entire session recorded... or take a friend.



    Yes... and no. If they just ask you about something you want to keep secret you can lie, or snap yourself out of trance or simply ignore them. But if they want to be a little cunning (which is not very difficult!) they can set up triggers that reveal you are lying, such as causing you to have a subconscious response when you lie (like making you blush)

    Another common way to uncover the truth is to set up finger signals. One finger would raise to indicate yes, and another to indicate no. This is a good way to determine the cause of a problem when the client does not consciously know why they do something that they want to change.

    If you have a deep dark secret and you're terrified of anyone finding out, then the chances are that you'd automatically wake up if a hypnotist started probing. However, that said, hypnotists are nice people, we are here to help you lose weight, stop smoking and have some fun on stage, contrary to popular belief, we don't care about peoples deepest darkest secrets.

    Another thing worth mentioning here is that people in trance can lie accidentally! Especially if you ask a leading question. While under hypnosis we are very suggestible and leading questions can create false memories that feel completely real.

    It is for this reason that hypnosis is never used in a court of law, it is simply not reliable enough (not to mention the fact that you can lie in trance intentionally too!)

    There have been cases where false memories of child abuse were created because of leading questions that resulted in wrongful imprisonment of innocent people. Not to mention the awful reality that was created for the children in question who adopted the belief that they had been abused.

    Trance is not a truth drug and lying in trance is certainly possible, so if you were thinking of learning hypnosis to probe your partner on their whereabouts last friday night... forget it. Hypnosis isn't what you are looking for.



    We don't really know. Various people have made suggestions over the years. The most commonly accepted idea is that during hypnosis, conscious focus is narrowed to such a degree that a hypnotized subject is only able to focus on the suggestion given, making them unable to entertain the possibility of it not being true.



    It's important to remember that hypnosis is a natural state that people go into all by themselves very often without even realising. Your job as a hypnotist is to help a person enter the hypnotic state on cue... then use it productively.

    Let me give you two examples of when people enter trance. The first is every night as they drift off to sleep. You can replicate this natural trance state by progressively relaxing your client. This is the kind of induction you'd usually use for hypnotherapy. To assist the induction you would also narrow their focus of attention.

    Another common hypnotic trance naturally occurs when people are shocked or confused. These natural trance states can often be the cause of phobias and they happen very very quickly!

    You can replicate the conditions that produce this kind of hypnosis by using shock and confusion. This is most suited to street or stage hypnosis and it's how the famous 'hand shake' induction works.



    Hypnosis is a state of consciousness that allows you to communicate with a persons subconscious mind. The difference between stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy is what you choose to communicate. The actual hypnotic state itself is the same whatever you're doing.

    Typically, stage hypnotists tend to favour rapid inductions, because they are very impressive for the audience to witness and speed things up nicely, keeping the energy of the performance high. However, a progressive relaxation induction works just as well on stage, and it's still very fascinating for people to see. I have used both inductions for stage work and usually decide what I'm going to do depending on my mood at the time... or the amount of time I have for the performance!

    Hypnotherapists almost always stick to progressive relaxation inductions, but you certainly don't have to. I have many clients that prefer rapid inductions and they have the additional benefit of allowing you to devote more of the session time to therapy.

    Either way, the trance state is the same. So the only real differences between stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy are your suggestions.... and the bright lights, the cheering crowds, the 'naked glasses' and the pay!

    I recommend you experiment with both. They are equally rewarding for different reasons and completely fascinating.



    Yes, to varying degrees! Some people are fantastic subjects, they go very deeply into trance really quickly and enjoy mind boggling success. When you meet one of these lucky individuals (and you will) you'll be amazed at what hypnosis can do. About 10% of people fall into this category, with a handful of individuals going much further... but they are very rare! (I've only met two in 18 years!)

    On the flip side, we have the unfortunate few that find entering trance very difficult. I 'was' one of these people. But your ability to go into trance is something that you can easily develop. So if you find it difficult to enter trance, don't worry, with a little practice (and a few suggestions) it get's much easier.

    Everyone else falls somewhere between these two extremes. There are some very simple suggestibility tests you can do to determine which people will be suitable for a particular style of induction.

    There is a myth that some people can't be hypnotized at all. This idea began because some scientists did a rather poor experiment. They recorded a standard hypnotic induction and played it to people to see if they went into trance or not. Some did, some didn't. They deduced from this that some people can't be hypnotized. That was very silly. The real outcome was that some people didn't go into trance at that time with that induction.

    Some people prefer different inductions. So if the scientists were a little more flexible (like real hypnotists are) they could have easily tried an alternative induction and found that everyone went into trance very nicely.



    Not really, if a person is old enough to understand basic English then they can be hypnotized, and if they are not old enough to understand basic English.... they can be hypnotized! If you want to help a baby into trance.. just rock them! You certainly don't need to use a formal induction script to go into hypnosis, everyone drifts in and out of trance states all of the time completely naturally.

    Hypnotic inductions vary depending on who you are hypnotising. An induction that would be ideal for an adult might be too boring for a child so you often need to use more creative inductions for children.

    And at the risk of stating the obvious... if you intend to hypnotize anyone under the age of 18 make sure you have their parents consent!



    Very easily! You could just say 'Eyes open, wide awake!' if you wanted to, it would work, but it's usually much nicer to bring people out gradually and offer them a few positive suggestions so that they feel great.

    If you find a subject doesn't wake up when you ask them to (and it will happen!) then they are probably really enjoying the trance, so if you have the time let them! Give them the suggestion that they can enjoy the trance state for a while and wake up when they are ready by opening their eyes in their own time.

    If you don't have the time and you need to wake them pronto just run through a basic wake up script and become increasingly enthusiastic as you do.

    Oh.. and if they have actually fallen asleep, you might want to give them a gentle nudge! It's impossible to become 'stuck' in hypnosis so you really have nothing to worry about on this one.



    This depends on where you live. Here in the UK the law regarding the practice of hypnosis is.... well it isn't! Which is very poor, but it is just the way things are. At the very least you will need public liability insurance and you should undergo more extensive study before you unleash yourself on the public. If you live outside of the UK then check with your local authorities because some states are very strict on the practice of hypnosis.

    Laws change and are updated often. UK hypnotists have been crying out for more stringent regulations for decades, so you never know, by the time you read this things may have changed, so it's always worth checking with your local authorities, just to be sure.



    Yes, hypnosis is very easy to do. You only need to talk to people. As you progress you will learn more complex inductions but even a very basic induction can be very effective and will be more than enough to get you started. Hypnosis very quickly becomes an obsession so be prepared to fall in love with this strange little phenomena, everyone does!

    Ideally, but not completely essentially, you will need to be able to speak.



    Yes. In more advanced hypnotic language patterns your inductions take advantage of (but do not rely on) ambiguous meanings of words that may not translate correctly, but a script will still work fine without these.

    A very commonly used example would be the phrase 'your unconscious' which contains the ambiguity 'You ARE unconscious' which is, of course, a direct command. These things do pop up often but an induction will still work without them if they do not carry over correctly to your language.

    Ideally, you should study with a hypnotist that speaks whatever language you intend using as they will be able to provide similar language patterns that a translated script would lose.



    Yes. You do this by either gaining rapport with someone and pacing and leading them into trance (by hypnotising yourself) or by creating an association that causes them to move in the direction of trance every time you perform a certain action (such as lowering your arm)

    Sorry, not anymore. I am still providing workshops and seminars, but not directly related to hypnosis. I am currently running several workshops on the application of the law of attraction using a combination of tools, including hypnosis, NLP and meditation, but I am not currently providing direct tuition on hypnosis other than via the products available through this website.
